UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown at Madison Square Garden, the No. 15 Alabama Crimson Tide stunned the fifth-ranked St. John’s Red Storm with a 103-96 victory on November 4, 2023. Labaron Philon Jr. led the charge, scoring an impressive 25 points and hitting a decisive 3-pointer with just two minutes remaining, extending Alabama’s lead to 98-88.

This victory marks a significant early-season achievement for Alabama, who showcased their resilience and offensive firepower. Philon, shooting 10 of 17 from the field, delivered a standout performance just days after his strong season debut. The Crimson Tide improved to 2-0 with this win and now face a challenging stretch ahead, including top-ranked Purdue, Illinois, and Gonzaga.

In addition to Philon’s stellar performance, Aden Holloway contributed 21 points after returning from a wrist injury. The duo of Holloway and Latrell Wrightsell, who added 17 points, combined for six of Alabama’s eleven successful 3-pointers, demonstrating their offensive depth. The Crimson Tide shot 48.1% from the field as they took control late in the first half, ending it with a 53-44 lead thanks to Holloway’s buzzer-beater.

Despite the loss, St. John’s Zuby Ejiofor shone with a remarkable 27 points, but the team struggled with free throws, missing 12 throughout the game. Bryce Hopkins and Ian Jackson added 19 and 14 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Alabama’s lead.

“We knew we had to stay composed in the final minutes, and we executed our game plan,” said Alabama head coach Nate Oats.

Alabama’s victory halted St. John’s impressive twelve-game winning streak at MSG, and the Red Storm will look to bounce back against William & Mary next Saturday night. As for the Crimson Tide, they prepare for a high-stakes matchup against Purdue on Thursday, November 9, 2023.

This game not only showcased the talent of both teams but also highlighted the electric atmosphere of Madison Square Garden, a venue that hadn’t hosted Alabama since the 2013-14 season. Fans can expect more thrilling matchups as the NCAA season unfolds.

Stay tuned for updates as both teams navigate their upcoming games and strive for success in this competitive season.
