Wilmington police have arrested a 44-year-old man, identified as Alexis Martinez, in connection with a series of burglaries that have taken place across the city in recent weeks. The arrest occurred on August 7, 2023, following a report of a burglary in progress on the 100 block of West 26th Street.
Officers responded to the scene at approximately 11:06 a.m. and, upon arrival, allege that Martinez fled on foot. After a brief pursuit, police apprehended him without any further incidents.
Investigators later linked Martinez to several other burglary cases throughout the city. These include incidents reported in the 2900 block of North Van Buren Street, the 1000 block of West 25th Street, and the 1000 block of West 24th Street.
Martinez now faces multiple criminal charges, including five counts of third-degree burglary, four counts of theft exceeding $1,500, four counts of criminal mischief under $1,000, and one count of resisting arrest. Following his arraignment in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas, he was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a cash-only bail set at $12,600.
The police department has reiterated that a suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding burglary incidents in Wilmington, prompting local law enforcement to increase vigilance and community awareness.
