Rooney Mara stars in Columbia Pictures' "THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO," also starring Daniel Craig.
Sky has officially announced the development of a new television adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The eight-part series will be produced by Left Bank Pictures, the creative team behind acclaimed projects like The Crown and Dept Q. This adaptation is based on the globally bestselling novels by Stieg Larsson.
The series aims to offer a “bold and contemporary reimagining” of Larsson’s work, ensuring that it remains relevant to today’s audience. According to Sky, the show will stay true to the core characters and investigative themes that characterize the Millennium novels, which have sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
Sky’s announcement comes as the original novel continues to influence various forms of media. The first film adaptation, released in 2011, was directed by David Fincher and starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. This critically acclaimed neo-noir thriller followed the story of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the enigmatic hacker Lisbeth Salander as they sought to unravel a decades-old mystery. The film was followed by The Girl in the Spider’s Web in 2018, directed by Fede Álvarez.
Production Details and Creative Team
While casting details for the new series remain under wraps, production is set to commence in Lithuania in the spring of 2024. The series will be written and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, known for his work on The Punisher and Behind Her Eyes, alongside Angela LaManna, who has credits for The Haunting Of Bly Manor.
Additional executive producers for this ambitious project include Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips from Left Bank Pictures, with Sam Hoyle representing Sky.
The series will be available on Sky platforms in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In terms of international distribution, Sony Pictures Television will oversee the rollout, with pre-sale efforts already initiated in the U.S.
As anticipation builds for this new adaptation, fans of Larsson’s work and newcomers alike are eagerly awaiting how the series will reinterpret these beloved characters for a modern audience.
