The Philadelphia Zoo is marking the release of a new children’s book titled A Family for Zoya: The True Story of an Endangered Cub. This nonfiction work narrates the remarkable survival story of an Amur tiger cub named Zoya, who overcame significant challenges with the assistance of dedicated zoo professionals and conservation partners. Zoya was born in July 2017 but was the only survivor of her litter and faced rejection from her mother, Koosaka.
In response to this crisis, the zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams provided round-the-clock support for Zoya before facilitating her transfer to Oklahoma City Zoo. In an innovative approach, Zoya was introduced to Lola, a Sumatran tiger that had recently given birth to three cubs. After a tense period of adjustment, Lola accepted Zoya, allowing her to nurse and thrive alongside her new siblings.
Highlighting Conservation and Kindness
The book is authored by Debra Kim Wolf, who emphasizes themes of courage, connection, and the critical role of conservation in Zoya’s journey. Wolf is committed to supporting wildlife initiatives, with 100% of the book’s proceeds going towards the Tiger Conservation Campaign. “Zoya’s journey reminds us that small acts of kindness, for animals or people, can make a big difference,” said Wolf.
Zoo officials believe Zoya’s survival showcases the power of collaboration among institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “Zoya’s story in particular shows how humans can work together to save wildlife,” stated Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman, President and CEO of Philadelphia Zoo. Senior veterinary technician Jenna Heinze, who played a vital role in Zoya’s care, described the experience as “living proof that humans can work together to save and protect animals.”
Zoya’s Journey Continues
Following her successful fostering, Zoya moved to Roosevelt Park Zoo in North Dakota in 2019 as part of a breeding program. She has since welcomed two litters of cubs, the most recent of which was born in May 2025.
To celebrate the book’s release, Philadelphia Zoo is hosting a public event on August 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM. The event will feature a book signing with the author, a meet-and-greet, and a tiger feeding session. Admission to the event is included with a regular ticket to the zoo. The book will be available for purchase at zoo gift shops, online, and during the event.
Currently, the zoo is home to four Amur tigers: females Koosaka and Rory, along with male brothers Wiz and Dimitri, who can be seen at the Big Cat Falls exhibit. This initiative not only highlights Zoya’s inspiring tale but also raises awareness about the conservation efforts essential for the survival of endangered species.
