Philadelphia is set to ring in the New Year with an exciting celebration featuring waterfront fireworks, a concert headlined by hip-hop icon LL Cool J, and significant transit modifications. As the city prepares for the transition to 2025, officials anticipate that tens of thousands will flock to Center City for the festivities.
The Visit PA New Year’s Eve Fireworks will illuminate the Delaware River with two shows scheduled for December 31, 2024, at 18:00 and midnight. Spectators can enjoy the vibrant displays from locations such as Penn’s Landing and the surrounding waterfront areas. In an effort to manage the expected influx of visitors, city and transit officials are advising against driving due to anticipated heavy congestion.
In addition to the fireworks, Philadelphia will host its inaugural outdoor New Year’s Eve concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The event, which will take place near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is set to commence with gates opening at 18:00 and the concert starting at 20:00. The lineup includes prominent artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Adam Blackstone, Dorothy, and Technician The DJ.
To accommodate the large crowds, SEPTA will implement modified service schedules. On December 31, Regional Rail trains will follow a weekday timetable, with additional late-night service on several lines including Chestnut Hill East and Trenton. Riders are encouraged to verify individual train schedules for accurate departure times and accessibility options.
The Broad Street Line and Market-Frankford Line will see extra service around the time of the fireworks, ensuring that attendees can easily reach their destinations. Select bus routes will also run on a modified weekday schedule, with detailed information available on the SEPTA website.
As the festivities conclude, transit disruptions are expected to continue into the following day due to preparations for the traditional Mummers Parade. Starting at 08:15 on January 1, 2025, several bus routes will be detoured on 15th Street. On New Year’s Day, Regional Rail, Metro, and bus services will operate on a Sunday schedule, although Bus Route 204 will not be in service.
With a combination of dazzling fireworks, a star-studded concert, and extensive transit adjustments, Philadelphia is gearing up for a memorable and lively New Year’s Eve. The city’s efforts reflect a commitment to providing an enjoyable experience for both residents and visitors as they welcome the New Year.
