Renowned filmmaker Peter Jackson will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, celebrating his extensive contributions to cinema. The festival announced this accolade on Thursday, commending Jackson for his unique blend of Hollywood blockbusters and auteur films, showcasing remarkable artistic vision and technological innovation.
Jackson, who gained fame for his work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has never had a film featured in the official selection at Cannes. However, his relationship with the festival dates back to 1988 when he introduced his first feature, Bad Taste, at the Marche du Film, securing worldwide distribution for the cult horror classic. In 2001, he screened 26 minutes of promotional footage from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, effectively winning over skeptical international distributors.
Celebrating a Legacy of Innovation
Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works has had a profound impact on the film industry, with the LOTR franchise grossing over $3 billion globally and earning a total of 17 Academy Awards, including 11 Oscars for the final installment, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Even Jackson’s prequel trilogy, The Hobbit, despite not receiving Academy recognition, achieved box office success, bringing in nearly $3 billion worldwide.
“To be honoured with an honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes is one of the greatest privileges of my career,” Jackson stated. “This festival has always celebrated bold, visionary cinema, and I’m incredibly grateful to the Festival de Cannes for being recognised among the filmmakers and the artists whose work continues to inspire me.”
The honor will be presented to Jackson during the opening ceremony of the 79th Cannes Film Festival on May 12, 2023. Cannes festival president Iris Knobloch remarked, “For its 79th year, the festival welcomes and thanks a filmmaker of boundless creativity who has brought prestige to the heroic fantasy genre.” Artistic director Thierry Frémaux emphasized Jackson’s transformative influence on Hollywood, stating, “Larger-than-life cinema is his trademark, and his all-encompassing art of entertainment is particularly ambitious.”
A Diverse Filmmaking Journey
Following his early cult classics such as Meet the Feebles (1989) and Dead Alive (1992), Jackson garnered critical acclaim with Heavenly Creatures (1994), a true-crime drama based on the chilling tale of two New Zealand teenagers whose obsessive friendship led to murder. This film featured breakout performances from Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey, earning Jackson an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay alongside his partner Fran Walsh.
After the success of LOTR, Jackson directed a high-profile remake of King Kong (2005) and adapted The Lovely Bones (2009). More recently, he has focused on large-scale documentaries, notably They Shall Not Grow Old (2018), which restored and colorized over 100 hours of original World War I footage, syncing it with numerous interviews. His miniseries The Beatles: Get Back, released in 2021, compiled 60 hours of previously unseen footage from the recording sessions of the album Let It Be in early 1969.
In an intriguing twist of fate, The Beatles had previously approached J.R.R. Tolkien in 1969 to propose their own adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, with Stanley Kubrick as the director and the band members cast in principal roles.
The 79th Cannes Film Festival will run from May 12 to May 23, 2023. The official selection lineup is set to be announced on April 9.
