OpenAI has entered into a significant multi-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), valued at $38 billion. This agreement grants OpenAI immediate and expanding access to AWS’s advanced infrastructure, enabling the AI company to enhance and scale its AI workloads effectively.
Under this partnership, AWS will provide OpenAI with its EC2 UltraServers. These servers boast hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs and the capability to scale to tens of millions of CPUs. The sophisticated infrastructure being developed features advanced clustering of Nvidia’s GB200 and GB300 GPUs, facilitating low-latency and high-performance AI processing. This setup is designed to accommodate a variety of workloads, including serving inference for ChatGPT and training next-generation models, with the flexibility to adapt to OpenAI’s evolving needs.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman highlighted that scaling frontier AI necessitates massive and reliable computing resources. He remarked that partnering with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem essential for powering the next era of advanced AI, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Additionally, Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, announced on social media platform X that OpenAI will begin utilizing AWS’s infrastructure immediately. He expressed confidence that all capacity would be deployed by the end of 2024, with further expansion opportunities expected in 2027 and beyond.
Shifts in Cloud Partnerships
This substantial partnership comes after a notable shift in OpenAI’s cloud service providers. Reports indicate that Microsoft was previously OpenAI’s exclusive cloud-computing partner until the arrangement ended in January 2023. Microsoft had invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and increased its investment to around $10 billion in 2023. Additionally, last month, OpenAI contracted to acquire additional Microsoft Azure services valued at $250 billion and agreed to grant Microsoft a 27 percent stake in the company, worth approximately $135 billion.
As part of its recapitalization strategy, OpenAI can now collaborate on product development with third parties, although Microsoft’s intellectual property rights will exclude OpenAI’s consumer hardware. Prior to finalizing this plan, OpenAI had also entered into an agreement to rent substantial computing power from Oracle for its Stargate joint venture project, which is aimed at enhancing its operational capabilities.
