The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that single and double lane closures will occur on northbound I-95 in South Philadelphia from August 25 to August 27, 2023. These closures are part of a significant project aimed at completing high-priority bridge repairs, with a total budget of $37.4 million.

Starting on the evening of August 25, a single lane will close from 21:00 to 00:00, followed by a double lane closure from 00:00 to 05:00 each night. The affected area stretches between Packer Avenue and Christian Street.

Details of the Bridge Repair Project

This project encompasses extensive maintenance aimed at ensuring the safety and functionality of the bridge. Crews will be working on various components, including bridge decks, superstructure elements, and substructures. Specific tasks involve addressing weld cracks, reinforcing concrete bridge decks, and replacing expansion joints. Additionally, workers will clean and repaint 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrade roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED luminaires.

The general contractor for this work is IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, New Jersey. The project is fully funded by federal dollars, highlighting the commitment to infrastructure improvement.

Motorists are advised to plan for delays and allow for extra travel time during the overnight closures, as significant backups are anticipated. All scheduled activities are contingent upon weather conditions, which may affect the timing of the work.
