Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, acknowledged increasing pressure following the team’s troubling performance, which has seen them lose nine of their last twelve matches across all competitions. In a press conference on Thursday, Slot reflected on the implications of this losing streak, particularly after a significant 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, marking the club’s third consecutive loss by a margin of three goals or more.
The current situation is a stark contrast to Slot’s inaugural season at the club, where he led Liverpool to a record-equaling 20th league title with a ten-point advantage over the nearest competitor, Arsenal. The reigning Premier League champions now find themselves in a precarious position, sitting 12th in the league standings and trailing the leaders by eleven points.
In his remarks, Slot emphasized the inherent pressure associated with managing a top club like Liverpool, stating, “There’s a lot of pressure if you work or play at a top club and even more so if you start losing more games than this club, or these players or this manager, is used to.” He contrasted the current stress of managing a losing team with the pressure to secure victories during their championship-winning season.
Despite the mounting challenges, Slot reaffirmed his commitment to the club, saying, “We fight on and we try to improve. That’s what we all try.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining the club’s fighting spirit, regardless of the difficulties faced.
Liverpool’s struggles are compounded by the high expectations surrounding the club, particularly after a summer transfer window that saw the team invest approximately $500 million (£377 million) in new talent, including star players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. The team is scheduled to face West Ham United on Sunday, where they will aim to turn their fortunes around and avoid falling further behind in the title race.
In terms of player availability, goalkeeper Alisson has returned to training after missing the PSV match due to illness. Additionally, Wirtz may also resume training in time for the West Ham fixture following a recent muscle issue. Slot mentioned that the back problem that forced Hugo Ekitike to leave the pitch against PSV is not expected to pose a significant risk.
As Liverpool prepares for their upcoming match, the focus remains on addressing the issues that have contributed to their recent form. The club’s supporters will be hoping for a resurgence that can restore the team’s competitive edge in the Premier League.
