German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has been forced to adjust his travel plans for a summit in Colombia due to a technical failure of a government aircraft. The German Air Force Airbus A350 was scheduled to depart from Hamburg but is currently out of service due to a defect in its de-icing system, as confirmed by the Foreign Office on Friday.

As a result, Wadephul will now fly commercially to Colombia to attend the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit, where he will represent Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Following the summit, the minister is set to continue to Bolivia for discussions with the newly elected government.

The trip is significant as it reflects Germany’s commitment to strengthening ties with Latin America. Wadephul is expected to discuss various issues, including trade and climate policy, during the CELAC meeting.

Technical Challenges in Government Aviation

The issue with the Airbus A350 has added to ongoing concerns regarding the reliability of Germany’s fleet of government aircraft. Over the past few years, the fleet has faced numerous technical challenges that have often led to travel disruptions for top officials.

Wadephul’s situation mirrors that of his predecessor, Annalena Baerbock, who experienced travel difficulties in August 2023. Baerbock was left stranded in Abu Dhabi when her government Airbus A340 encountered a malfunction, specifically with the landing flaps not retracting after take-off. This forced her to cancel a planned trip to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, ultimately returning to Germany on a commercial flight.

The Air Force spokesperson indicated that the necessary spare parts for the A350 have been ordered, but no timeline for repairs has been provided.

Upcoming Commitments

In addition to his attendance at the CELAC summit, Wadephul’s itinerary includes meetings with counterparts from the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrialized nations in Canada on Tuesday and Wednesday. These discussions are crucial as they will address pressing global issues, including economic recovery and international security.

The ongoing challenges with the government aircraft fleet highlight the need for an assessment of aviation resources dedicated to official travel. As international engagements continue, ensuring reliable transportation for government officials will remain a priority for the German Foreign Office.
