Families of two men who were held hostage in Gaza received letters from their loved ones last month, detailing their experiences and hopes during captivity. Guy Gilboa-Dalal and Alon Ohel, both released on Monday after more than two years, communicated their longing for home through letters written in late August 2023. The letters were delivered to their families in Israel by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

In a poignant letter shared with KAN, Gilboa-Dalal’s father, Ilan Dalal, revealed that his son expressed a wish to be released before his younger sister’s upcoming 18th birthday in December. “I saw Gal and Eli together in a TV report with our shirts on,” the letter read. “I don’t stop thinking about you, and thoughts of you give me strength.” The family noted that the letter was written in neat handwriting, which provided them with hope regarding Gilboa-Dalal’s condition while in captivity.

Ohel’s letter conveyed similar sentiments, expressing his desire to reunite with his family and his determination to endure the challenges he faced during his captivity. According to KAN, both letters were written shortly before the resurgence of Israeli military operations in Gaza City, which began in late August.

Israeli sources suggest that Hamas may have strategically allowed communication with the ICRC at that time to indicate the presence of Israeli hostages in areas that could potentially be targeted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This move could serve to deter military actions aimed at the terrorist organization.

As families continue to process the emotional impact of these letters, the situation remains tense in the region. The release of Gilboa-Dalal and Ohel marks a significant moment for their families, who had been waiting for news and hoping for their safe return.
