The European Union is advancing a proposal for a “drone wall” defense system, aimed at safeguarding its eastern borders from potential unmanned aircraft threats originating from Russia. On the same day that the proposal was first mentioned, a Russian drone entered Polish airspace, highlighting the immediate need for protective measures. In her annual state of the union address, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, introduced the concept of an “eastern flank watch,” which would include the drone wall. “We need to act now — Europe must deliver a strong and united response to Russia’s drone incursions at our borders,” von der Leyen stated, emphasizing the necessity of immediate actions to establish the drone wall.

A kickoff planning call took place last week, involving representatives from nations bordering Russia, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Finland. Denmark, currently holding the EU’s rotating leadership, also participated in the discussions.
