PHILADELPHIA, PA — The historic Cobbs Creek Golf Course reopened this week, introducing a suite of modern amenities aimed at revitalizing the beloved public course. The unveiling includes a state-of-the-art driving range, a full-service restaurant, and a community event space, all designed to attract more visitors to the site.
The Cobbs Creek Foundation launched the new Lincoln Financial Center, featuring a two-story driving range equipped with 68 Toptracer practice bays, including 20 heated bays that can be reserved. This initiative marks a significant step in the ongoing transformation of Cobbs Creek into a year-round destination for both golf enthusiasts and local residents. The facility is located at 7403 Lansdowne Ave and is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00.
Jeff Shanahan, President of the Cobbs Creek Foundation, expressed excitement over the opening, emphasizing the foundation’s commitment to welcoming golfers and the community back to the historic grounds. This project is part of a collaboration with Lincoln Financial, which became a founding sponsor of the nonprofit foundation in March 2024. The partnership aims to foster community education, mentorship, and networking programs at the Cobbs Creek Golf and Education Campus.
John Kennedy, Chief Distribution and Brand Officer of Lincoln Financial, noted the importance of the center as a year-round venue for golf, dining, and community events. The driving range merges practice with dining, allowing guests to order food and beverages directly to their practice bays, enhancing the overall experience.
Accompanying the driving range is The Little Horse Tavern, created through a partnership involving the Cobbs Creek Foundation, Fitler Club, and Strother Enterprises. The restaurant features a menu rich in classic golf course offerings, including burgers, wood-fired pizzas, salads, and cocktails. Open daily from 12:00 to 20:00, it accommodates both reservations and walk-in customers.
Above the restaurant, the venue also houses an event space named 1916 by Fitler Club, capable of hosting over 200 guests. This space is now available for meetings, private events, and community gatherings, symbolically named for the year Cobbs Creek Golf Course first opened to the public.
Weather permitting, the Q School Short Course will also debut soon. Designed by TGR Design, the firm founded by professional golfer Tiger Woods, this new nine-hole layout aims to introduce newcomers to the game while providing seasoned players an opportunity to refine their skills. Limited tee times will be offered on favorable weather days.
Chris Parker, General Manager of the Cobbs Creek campus, encouraged locals to visit and experience the new offerings: “This winter, we’re inviting Philly to come out to Cobbs Creek — hit some balls, try our new short course, bring friends, share a meal, and experience what we’re building here.”
The Cobbs Creek Foundation is in the process of raising $180 million to fully restore and revitalize the historic golf course, with additional phases planned in the coming years. The restoration of the 18-hole championship course, led by architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, is currently underway, with an opening anticipated for 2027. The campus is managed by Troon, a global golf and hospitality services firm, ensuring a high standard for both golf and community engagement.
As Cobbs Creek embarks on this new chapter, it aims to blend a rich historical legacy with modern amenities, welcoming both golfers and the community to enjoy a revitalized experience.
