Renowned Swedish crime writer and screenwriter Camilla Läckberg has made headlines with the release of her six-episode series, Camilla Läckberg’s Erica, now available on MHz Choice in North America. This adaptation of her popular Fjällbacka series marks a significant milestone in her international career, further solidifying her reputation as the “Queen of Swedish Noir.” The series, originally produced in French by Studio TF1, combines elements from three of Läckberg’s best-selling novels: The Ice Princess, The Preacher, and The Stonecutter.

Expanding Her Global Reach

Läckberg’s stories have resonated with audiences worldwide, with over 35 million copies of her books sold across more than 60 countries. She expressed her excitement about the global appeal of her work, stating, “I am very happy that my stories are travelling all over the world. It is a very special feeling.” Despite her success, Läckberg emphasizes that she does not write with a global audience in mind, as this could hinder her creativity.

The transformation of her character Erica into a French narrative was met with enthusiasm. Läckberg acknowledged the changes necessary for the adaptation, including location and character names. “I loved the idea of Erica going French. But of course, changes have to be made – a different location, some names have changed, and there is also a French ‘flair’ to that version,” she noted. Nevertheless, she feels that the essence of her characters remains intact.

Future Projects and Aspirations

Looking ahead, Läckberg is eager to continue her work in film and television. She is currently involved in multiple projects, although she refrained from disclosing specific details. “Working with TV and film has become a passion,” she stated, indicating her commitment to storytelling across various formats. In addition to adapting her own novels, she is also exploring original stories for television, such as the Netflix series The Glass Dome.

Her involvement in the creative process is hands-on, as she actively participates in writers’ rooms. “I am deeply engaged throughout the project… it’s important that my ideas don’t get sidetracked along the way,” Läckberg explained. This dedication is evident in her roles as co-owner of two production companies: Creative Society and Bad Flamingo Studios. One of her latest projects with Bad Flamingo, titled The Dog, has received accolades at various film festivals worldwide.

Läckberg’s talents extend beyond writing; she has also participated in Swedish reality television, including Dancing With the Stars in 2012, where she finished in fourth place. Her passion for performance did not end there; she later took part in other shows like Masked Singer in 2023. “Doing Dancing With the Stars is still one of the most fun things I have ever done in my life,” she reflected.

As she continues to build her legacy, Läckberg dreams of making an impact in Hollywood. “My biggest dream, however, is to write something for TV or film that gets done in America. I mean – who doesn’t dream of Hollywood?” Her ambitions are not just confined to her literary work; she recently launched a children’s book series called Super-Charlie, which has been adapted into an animated movie and sold in over 50 countries.

Läckberg’s journey illustrates her determination and adaptability in an ever-evolving entertainment landscape. With her sights set on further international success, she is eager for what the future holds. “The adaptation of my books and ideas for international TV is a huge, big new road opening up in my career,” she concluded.
