UPDATE: Major gaming companies are eyeing Georgia’s casino market as lawmakers reconsider the state’s long-standing gambling ban. Wynn Resorts and Boyd Gaming made their case during a House study committee hearing, declaring their readiness to invest heavily if the state constitution is amended.
During the hearing held earlier today, Christopher Gordon, Wynn’s development manager, emphasized Georgia’s potential as a prime location for a destination casino resort. He cited the success of the $2.6 billion Encore Boston Harbor, which opened in 2019 and has generated over $1 billion in gaming taxes since its debut. Gordon stated, “A similar complex in Georgia could create thousands of jobs and significantly boost state revenue.”
Boyd Gaming, which reported earnings exceeding $1 billion in the last quarter, also showcased strong interest. Spokesman Ryan Soultz hinted at the profitability Georgia could present, contingent on voter approval for legalized gambling.
The committee’s discussions are timely, as they mark the second session dedicated to exploring the economic benefits and social implications of expanding gambling in Georgia. Lawmakers are prioritizing potential income and job creation, while industry experts recommend capping the number of licenses to prevent market saturation.
Midtown, Savannah, and North Georgia are being touted as top locations for future casino developments, according to property adviser Rick Lackey. He suggested strategic sites in Downtown Atlanta and near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport that could attract tourists and residents alike.
However, significant legal hurdles remain. Past efforts to expand gambling, including proposals in 2018 and this year, failed to advance to a vote. Rep. Ron Stephens indicated that the next legislative session will focus on sports betting, with potential ballot measures appearing in 2026 if they secure super-majority backing in both houses.
Supporters argue that regulated betting could help Georgia compete with neighboring states and secure funding for vital programs such as the HOPE Scholarship, which is facing funding challenges in the forthcoming years. Advocates point to North Carolina’s experience, where legal sports betting exceeded financial expectations, suggesting Georgia could similarly benefit while reducing illegal offshore betting.
