URGENT UPDATE: Heavy rain in Southern California has triggered devastating mudslides, resulting in the tragic death of a 2-year-old boy and prompting multiple rescues. The severe weather struck on July 14, 2023, with fast-moving debris wreaking havoc east of Los Angeles.
In a heart-wrenching incident in Barstow, floodwaters swept away a vehicle carrying 26-year-old Brandon Padilla Aguilera and his son, Xavier Padilla Aguilera. While the father was rescued, the little boy sadly drowned and was found later on Friday. Authorities confirmed the father and son became separated as the waters surged.
Rescue operations were intense, with emergency services saving 10 people stranded on state Route 38 near Jenks Lake. Fortunately, no injuries or additional missing persons were reported in that incident, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District.
Mudslides also struck the mountain communities of Forest Falls, Oak Glen, and Potato Canyon, causing significant damage to homes. On Thursday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff issued an evacuation warning for nearby areas, including Angelus Oaks and Seven Oaks, due to the risk of mud and debris flows.
The storm, driven by the remnants of Tropical Storm Mario, unleashed over 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) of rain within an hour, with an additional half inch (1.3 cm) following shortly after. This is a significant amount for a region accustomed to much drier conditions. Meteorologist Kyle Wheeler from the National Weather Service in San Diego highlighted the extraordinary rainfall levels.
As forecasts indicate more storms this weekend, fire officials are urging residents to remain vigilant. This is not the first time Forest Falls has faced such perilous conditions; similar mudslides occurred just three years ago, following devastating wildfires in the region.
Authorities have yet to assess the full scale of the damage or the total number of homes affected. As the situation develops, local officials emphasize the importance of preparedness to ensure the safety of residents in affected areas.
