UPDATE: As winter blankets New York State, local law enforcement is ramping up snowmobile safety measures. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, is offering free snowmobile safety courses to reduce the risk of accidents during this busy season.
Snowmobiles are now a common sight across New York, but the Sheriff’s Office warns that challenges accompany the winter fun. According to reports, speeding is the leading cause of snowmobile accidents, with 122 incidents logged in the 2024-2025 season, resulting in 5 fatalities. Authorities are urging riders to operate responsibly and wait before hitting the throttle.
“Driving at an appropriate speed is crucial,” stated Wayne County Deputy Sheriff Matt Ryndock. “New York state law prohibits speeds over 55 miles per hour, and sometimes even lower limits are posted. Unsafe speeds are the biggest factor we see in accidents.”
The upcoming snowmobile safety course is set for January 19, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lakeshore Riders Groomer Barn in North Rose. This course is targeted at youth aged 10-18 and new riders, focusing on snowmobile operation, proper gear, and emergency preparedness.
Ryndock emphasized the importance of understanding trail etiquette and the laws governing snowmobiles. “It’s a privilege, not a right, to ride on these trails,” he said. “Thanks to private landowners, we have access to 200 miles of trails in Wayne County.”
The Sheriff’s Office aims to provide life-saving education at no cost to participants. “We’re here to protect and serve the community, and this is a perfect opportunity to show that we’re not just enforcing laws; we’re also here to help,” Ryndock added.
With the snowmobile season picking up, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office encourages all riders to prioritize safety and responsibility. The free courses are filling up fast—register now to ensure a safe and enjoyable riding experience this winter.
