UPDATE: A significant safety incident in downtown Aurora has led to the closure of a sidewalk and part of Galena Boulevard after approximately 200 bricks fell from a building on July 15, 2023. The incident occurred around 6 p.m., prompting immediate evacuation of nearby apartments and businesses.
Authorities confirm that bricks fell from the facade of the building located at 102 and 104 E. Galena Blvd. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. However, the ongoing closures affect the sidewalk outside popular businesses, including Superjumbo Records and Leon’s Barber Shop, as well as two lanes of traffic leading toward Stolp Island.
According to Aurora Director of Development Services Josh Ream, the damage appears non-structural, but safety measures are crucial. He indicated that the sidewalk and adjacent lanes will remain closed until scaffolding is erected on-site. “We anticipate reopening the sidewalk alongside one lane before the end of this week, with the second lane to follow in the coming weeks,” Ream stated.
The fallen bricks were part of a nonstructural outer layer that, according to Ream, would not meet current building codes. This incident is a reminder of the potential hazards posed by aging structures in the area, a concern that has been raised in the past. In 2019, bricks similarly fell from the nearby Elmslie Building without causing injuries.
As of now, the main entrances to the residences above the businesses remain closed. While residents can access a back entrance, the city is prioritizing the installation of scaffolding to ensure a safe pedestrian pathway for reopening the businesses.
City officials are set to evaluate the damage once the scaffolding is in place, looking into whether the outer layer of bricks needs complete removal or if replacements can suffice.
