URGENT UPDATE: Honda has just announced a voluntary recall affecting over 400,000 vehicles in the United States due to a serious safety concern: the potential for accessory wheels to detach while driving. The recall specifically targets the Honda Civic models from 2016 to 2021, raising alarming safety issues for drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), only 3,276 units are confirmed to have the problematic accessory 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. However, the risk of these wheels separating from the vehicle poses an increased danger of crashes and injuries, particularly at high speeds.
The recall was detailed in a letter sent by the NHTSA on November 6, 2025, highlighting a manufacturing error by the supplier. Specifically, the steel lug seat inserts in the aluminum wheels may not have been properly installed, causing the lug nut seating surface to deform. This defect can lead to loose wheel nuts, ultimately resulting in a wheel detaching from the car.
Owners of affected vehicles are urged to act immediately. Honda has stated that authorized dealerships will provide inspections and necessary replacements of the defective wheels at no charge. The automaker emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue swiftly to ensure driver safety on the roads.
Honda has not reported any injuries or crashes linked to this defect so far. However, they are taking proactive measures by mailing notification letters to affected owners by December 8, 2025. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) for the recalled units will be searchable on NHTSA.gov from the same date.
As this recall unfolds, consumers should remain vigilant. This recall follows a week of significant vehicle safety concerns, as Toyota also faced two major recalls impacting thousands of vehicles over engine issues and camera defects.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing situation as Honda prioritizes customer safety and works to resolve this urgent matter.
