URGENT UPDATE: Volunteers are urgently needed for the Big Backpack Build, a vital initiative by the Storehouse of Community Resources, aiming to prepare thousands of students in Kent County for a successful school year. On Tuesday, August 12, 2024, from 9 a.m. to noon, community members will gather at DeVos Place to pack an impressive 12,500 backpacks filled with essential school supplies.
The organizers are calling on individuals aged 18 and older, families with older children, and corporate groups to join this important cause. Volunteers can sign up online and should wear comfortable clothing as they will be on their feet for the duration of the event. Light snacks will be provided to keep energy levels up as volunteers work together to make a difference.
In addition to packing backpacks, there are opportunities for volunteers to assist in distributing these backpacks to elementary students. This will take place at the In The Image SHOES 2025 program at DeVos Place from August 13-15, 2024, where each backpack will be given for free with the purchase of a new pair of shoes.
Last year’s inaugural event saw over 150 volunteers come together to pack more than 10,000 backpacks, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting local students. This year’s goal is even more ambitious, highlighting the growing need for educational resources in the area.
The remaining backpacks will be distributed throughout Kent County by the Kent School Services Network and their dedicated team of coordinators. Those unable to volunteer are encouraged to contribute through online donations to help cover the costs of backpacks and supplies.
