UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the UMass women’s basketball team faced their first defeat of the season against Army, with a final score of 64-61. This loss, occurring at West Point, comes just before a lengthy 13-day break for the Minutewomen (7-1).
The game started off positively for UMass, who led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter. The teams exchanged baskets, but UMass pulled ahead with key plays from players like Yahmani McKayle, who contributed 13 points and five rebounds, and Megan Olbrys, leading the team with 16 points.
Despite a strong start, UMass struggled to maintain their momentum. Coach Mike Leflar noted, “They made winning plays [in the] second half, fourth quarter down the stretch and we weren’t able to.” This struggle became evident as Army surged, outscoring UMass 21-19 in the final quarter.
The Minutewomen faced intense pressure from Army throughout the game, with critical fouls affecting their play. Chinenye Odenigbo fouled out after her fifth personal foul, leaving UMass vulnerable in the closing minutes.
As the game progressed, UMass’s lead evaporated. They entered the fourth quarter trailing 43-42 after a late three-pointer from Army’s Camryn Tade. The Minutewomen’s inability to break through Army’s defensive pressure ultimately sealed their fate.
Looking ahead, UMass will regroup during their break and prepare for the upcoming FIU Christmas Classic in Miami, scheduled for December 19 and 20. The first game is set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. Leflar expressed optimism, stating, “I’m looking forward to us being ready to go at practice…Tuesday we’re going to get after it.”
This defeat serves as a wake-up call for UMass, emphasizing the need for improvement as they head into the remainder of their season. Fans and supporters will be eager to see how the team responds after this tough loss.
