UPDATE: The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has issued an urgent travel advisory for southern Jefferson County as relentless bands of lake effect snow continue to batter the region. Heavy snowfall throughout the night has made travel conditions “very difficult to impossible,” with deep snow cover on roads and severely reduced visibility.

The National Weather Service has confirmed a winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday, predicting accumulations of 2 to 4 feet in the most persistent snow bands. Winds are expected to reach up to 35 mph, creating hazardous blowing snow conditions. Wind chills will plummet to as low as minus-10 degrees overnight, making outdoor exposure particularly dangerous.

Snow bands are forecasted to meander north and south throughout the day and into the evening, significantly impacting the greater Watertown area. Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts before considering travel. The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that conditions can change rapidly due to the nature of lake effect snow, which typically falls in narrow bands.

Authorities strongly recommend that anyone who must travel wear or bring appropriate outerwear for extreme temperatures. Local schools are also monitoring conditions, and closures or delays may be announced as the situation develops.

As snowfall continues to accumulate, officials urge residents to prioritize safety and remain indoors if possible. The impact of this storm is expected to be significant, with potential for further disruptions in the coming days.
