URGENT UPDATE: Therapy dogs at St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, California, are making a significant impact on patient care as they provide emotional support during challenging times. The Heavenly Hounds Program, which started in 2007, features dogs like Franco the Great Dane, who dons a Batman cape to bring smiles to patients and staff alike.
Volunteer handler Gina Paul describes Franco as a lively companion, stating, “He’s Batman at work, but he’s Darth Vader at home.” With his cape on, Franco is ready to uplift spirits, proving that even a brief interaction can transform a tough day into a positive experience. “We just love walking down the halls and making people happy,” Paul adds.
The program has gained attention for its ability to relieve stress, especially for patients facing surgeries. According to Brandon Miller, the Volunteer Services Manager, “If they’re having a rough day, just one of the Heavenly Hounds coming by can change their day.” This timely intervention is crucial in the hospital environment, where stress levels can spike.
Before the pandemic, the Heavenly Hounds Program had a larger roster of therapy dogs, but it is now actively seeking to expand its team. “If you think your dog can work in public, please get them out, get them socialized and get them tested,” Paul urges. This call to action aims to replenish the program’s numbers and ensure that more patients can benefit from the healing power of animal companionship.
The presence of therapy dogs has been particularly requested in high-stress areas such as the Emergency Room. As healthcare systems continue to navigate post-pandemic challenges, the emotional support provided by these canines remains vital.
With therapy dogs like Franco leading the charge, the Heavenly Hounds Program exemplifies how simple acts of kindness can have profound effects on mental well-being. Their work continues to resonate, offering hope and happiness to those who need it most.
