URGENT UPDATE: As winter weather sets in, experts warn that staying active can be a challenge! New strategies have emerged from Family and Consumer Sciences specialist, Sharolyn Jackson, to help everyone maintain health and fitness during the colder months.
According to Jackson, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week—equivalent to just 30 minutes five days a week. This can be achieved through simple activities like a brisk 10- to 15-minute walk outdoors. Make sure to dress appropriately in layers, wearing a hat, gloves, and sturdy walking shoes to combat the cold.
Jackson notes that children enjoy playing in the snow, making it a perfect opportunity for adults to join in on the fun while getting exercise. Tasks like shoveling snow or raking leaves can also provide effective workouts. However, she emphasizes the importance of listening to your body to avoid injury. “Muscles will be tired and a little achy after good exercise, but you don’t want to work to the point of injury,” Jackson advises.
If outdoor conditions are less inviting, there are plenty of indoor options. Jackson suggests utilizing stairs for a quick workout or even investing in a walking pad for your office. “I keep a walking pad in my office and try to use it while listening to calls,” she shares.
For those looking to enhance their strength, flexibility, and balance, Jackson offers the following tips:
– Engage in simple strengthening exercises using body weight or household items, such as performing arm curls with cans of vegetables while watching TV.
– Incorporate small jumps or hops around the house to build bone strength.
– Practice balance by standing on one foot while brushing your teeth or washing dishes.
Jackson also recommends wide-leg squats while seated and standing during TV time or family conversations.
Mark your calendars for early 2026, as the Cottonwood Extension District will launch programs like Stay Strong Stay Healthy and Walk With Ease aimed at promoting fitness in the community.
