UPDATE: Staten Island is buzzing with excitement as it launches its first Summer Streets event of the season on July 15, 2023. The event transforms Forest Avenue into a vibrant car-free zone, inviting residents to enjoy the warm summer weather and connect with their community.
Despite a sparse turnout reported by Advance/SILive.com, attendees are taking full advantage of the opportunity to get outdoors. The Varughese family, who moved to Staten Island from Brooklyn three years ago, shared their enthusiasm. “There’s so much traffic everywhere, so sometimes it’s nice to have streets closed,” said Thomas Varughese, highlighting the importance of creating spaces for community interaction.
Mayor Eric Adams previously announced that this year’s Summer Streets program is set to be the largest in the city’s history, covering over 22 miles of car-free streets across all five boroughs. Edwina Martin, Staten Island’s public administrator, hopes to see more events like this, comparing it to larger open streets celebrations in other boroughs. “Right now, there’s such disconnectedness and people aren’t speaking to each other,” she said, emphasizing the event’s role in fostering community spirit.
Each year, Summer Streets allows pedestrians and cyclists to roam freely while exploring various vendors. Among them is the Animal Care Center, which aims to raise awareness as its shelters reach capacity. Paul Sanders, in charge of the Staten Island shelter, stated, “The more that we can get out in the community, the more we can talk about the great animals we have and other resources we can provide.”
Adding to the cultural richness of the event, a captivating Puerto Rican performance by the Cimarrones drew significant attention. Marjorie Garcia, head of the Staten Island Puerto Rican Neighbors, remarked on the importance of events like these for promoting Puerto Rican pride. “We have a large social media following, but not everyone is on social media,” she noted, stressing the need for community outreach.
As the day unfolds, Staten Islanders are encouraged to participate in the festivities and explore the car-free streets. Local vendors and cultural performances await, promising a delightful summer experience for all. Stay tuned for further updates on the Summer Streets program as it continues to evolve throughout the season.
This event not only highlights the importance of community engagement but also showcases the best of what Staten Island has to offer. Don’t miss out on the chance to enjoy this unique, car-free experience!
