BREAKING: Springfield Central High School has officially dedicated its basketball court as “Travis Best Court” in a heartfelt ceremony held just before the Golden Eagles’ game against Agawam on Monday night. The event marked a significant milestone in honoring Best, a former All-American guard who transformed the local basketball scene.

As Best spoke to a packed crowd at Springfield Central, his voice trembled with emotion as he reflected on his early years on the court and the unwavering support from his father, Leo. “I remember passing the ball around at seven, eight, nine years of age, and I’d always take a look over at the door,” Best recalled, emphasizing the pivotal role his father played in his basketball journey.

Best, who graduated from Springfield Central in 1991, was a true sensation, scoring a record-breaking 81 points in a single game against Putnam on February 8, 1991. He led his team to an undefeated season, finishing with a 25-0 record and clinching the MIAA Division I state title that year, leaving an indelible mark in Western Massachusetts basketball history.

During the ceremony, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno reminisced about witnessing Best’s talent firsthand when he was just 11 years old. He noted how Best’s games drew huge crowds, turning Springfield Civic Center into a basketball mecca during his high school years.

Speakers included Springfield Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall and Best’s youth basketball coach Rich Johnson, who brought along a cherished jersey from Best’s early playing days. Former Georgia Tech assistant coach Sherman Dillard traveled from Iowa City, Iowa, to honor Best, recalling the challenge of recruiting him to Atlanta when he was in high school.

Best reflected on the importance of integrity and respect, saying, “Every generation finds a new way to define what being cool is to them… It’s always cool to be different, but always do it with respect.” He emphasized that the naming of the court should inspire future generations to pursue excellence both on and off the court.

With a mural of Best’s likeness already adorning downtown Springfield, this court dedication serves as a powerful reminder of his legacy and the values he embodies. Best’s journey from a local star to an NBA player is not just a story of athletic achievement, but one that signifies the importance of community and family support.

As Springfield celebrates this honor, the message is clear: Travis Best’s impact transcends basketball, inspiring young athletes to strive for their best in all aspects of life.
