BREAKING: South Caldwell’s rising star, Mcartney Harrington, has just been named the 4A West Region Player of the Year by the North Carolina Fastpitch Coaches Association. This prestigious honor comes as Harrington led her team to victory in the state softball championship held in Durham last May, where she also clinched the MVP award.
Harrington, a committed player for Clemson University, showcased her exceptional talent this season by batting an impressive .510, hitting 12 home runs, and driving in 45 RBIs. She also recorded 31 walks, achieving a remarkable .636 on-base percentage and a 1.605 OPS. Her performance has made waves in the Hickory area, where she joins a prestigious list of 20 all-state players recognized for their excellence.
In her own words, Harrington expressed her surprise at the recognition, stating, “When my mom was asking, she said, ‘who do you think won it?’ I started naming all these players, and she said, ‘no.’ It was a big surprise.” Reflecting on her success, Harrington credited her teammates and the fierce rivalry with Alexander Central for pushing her to elevate her game. “Having great teammates helped me play to my best ability,” she said.
As Harrington prepares for her senior year, her focus is clear: “For my last high school year, first of all, have fun,” she noted. She aims to hit even more home runs and aspires to be named Gatorade Player of the Year, a challenging accolade that she is determined to pursue.
In addition to Harrington, Karsyn Sigmon from Fred T. Foard has also been recognized, winning the 3A District Seven Pitcher of the Year for the third consecutive year. Sigmon, committed to play at Wofford College, emphasized the importance of her teammates, saying, “I couldn’t have won the award without my teammates behind me.” She aims to continue advancing her skills for future success in college.
South Caldwell celebrated a total of six all-state players, while Alexander Central celebrated four. Notably, the 2A class saw Bandys with four nods, and both Bunker Hill and Maiden each had two players recognized.
As these talented athletes prepare for the next season, their achievements inspire both young players and fans alike. With the 2024 season on the horizon, all eyes will be on Harrington and her teammates as they strive for greater heights in North Carolina softball.
