BREAKING: Sierra Canyon’s high school football team, dubbed “The Kaboom Squad,” has put the competition on notice with an astonishing 12 consecutive quarters of defensive shutouts. In a stunning display of athleticism, the Trailblazers have overwhelmed opponents, including formidable teams like JSerra and Oaks Christian, with a recent 63-0 victory that solidified their reputation.
This defensive unit, featuring a mix of returning players and talented transfers, has created a wall that few offenses can breach. Coach Jon Ellinghouse praised the depth of his squad, stating that even second-string players are performing at a high level. As the Trailblazers prepare for their upcoming game against Orange Lutheran on September 18, 2023, they aim to maintain their dominance and improve their standings ahead of the playoffs.
The Kaboom Squad is led by standout players like defensive lineman Richard Wesley, a Texas commit who wears the same number as Rams legend Aaron Donald. Linebacker Ronen Zamorano brings intelligence and tenacity to the field, while the secondary boasts several college-bound stars, including Madden Riordan and Havon Finney Jr.
While the shutout streak is impressive, Ellinghouse acknowledges that challenges lie ahead. The Trailblazers face Downey and their star quarterback Oscar Rios on Friday, which could potentially end their impressive run. Despite this, the team is building momentum and confidence as they close the gap with elite teams like St. John Bosco and Mater Dei.
Defensive coordinator Chris Rizzo has a variety of strategies at his disposal, wearing his signature backward baseball cap and sunglasses on the sidelines. He noted that while the defense is strong, there are still areas for improvement. “We have some weaknesses. We’re not perfect,” Rizzo stated.
The Trailblazers’ success is not only about halting opponents’ scoring; it’s also about enhancing their offense during practices. “It makes our guys better,” Ellinghouse remarked, highlighting the intense competition within the team. Rizzo added, “The secondary is pretty star-studded. They embrace the grind and play for each other.”
As Sierra Canyon continues to build on its impressive streak, fans and followers eagerly await the upcoming match against Orange Lutheran, where they hope to further solidify their status as one of the top defenses in high school football. With the playoffs on the horizon, the Kaboom Squad is ready to prove they are a force to be reckoned with.
