UPDATE: A second shooter has been sentenced in the tragic murder of reality TV star Ron Shirley’s son, Harley Alexander “Alex” Shirley, in Garner, North Carolina. Joshua Christopher Stewart, now 21, received consecutive sentences totaling 29 years and 10 months for his role in the shooting that occurred on February 17, 2022.

Stewart pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder on September 6, 2023, according to the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors confirmed that Stewart, along with Nathan Jackson, fired 20 shots into a parked vehicle, directly targeting Shirley, who was sitting in the back seat.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the 21-year-old Shirley but also left Sophie Catherine Hagy, seated beside him, permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Hagy was not the intended target, emphasizing the reckless nature of the violence that unfolded that night.

Prosecutors revealed that Stewart and Jackson were suspected members of the Nine Trey Bloods gang. Stewart’s plea agreement included his testimony against Jackson, who was sentenced to a total of 15 years to life in December for first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Johnston County District Attorney Jason Waller expressed his dismay over the senseless violence, stating, “Such senseless acts of violence cannot, and will not, be tolerated in our community.” He added that his office will continue to pursue violent crimes rigorously, emphasizing the lasting impact on the families involved.

As the community grapples with the repercussions of this tragedy, attention now turns to the ongoing fight against gang violence and the need for greater safety measures. This case stands as a grim reminder of the urgent need for intervention and support to prevent further loss of life.
