Today’s ceremony also celebrated ten awards given to county departments for their dedication to sustainability and energy conservation. Among the award recipients was the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, recognized for their role in the innovative ‘Flip the Strip’ program. This initiative replaced a staggering 160,930 square feet of unused turf with water-efficient landscaping, significantly reducing water consumption while bolstering the county’s long-term drought resilience plans.
Wilson shared her personal commitment to the initiative, stating, “I am one of the people that gets a phone call when I say, ‘Hey, county, can we cut back on our water use?'” She acknowledged the visible efforts being made, noting that the county must lead by example in water conservation.
The ceremony celebrated additional honorees, including Salt Lake County Arts and Culture for their contributions to the Great Salt Lake, showcasing the diverse efforts across departments to foster environmental responsibility.
