URGENT UPDATE: The Safe Space Winter Shelter is set to kick off its crucial winter shelter program in Chico from December 21 to March 1, expanding its services to meet the urgent needs of the homeless community this winter. This initiative is a response to the rising demand for shelter and support as temperatures drop.

The nonprofit will operate in partnership with five local churches, including Chico First Baptist Church and Faith Lutheran Church of Chico, providing overnight accommodations for those in need. Guests can arrive from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 1909 The Esplanade, where shuttles will transport them to their overnight locations.

In an exclusive interview, Shelter Operation Coordinator Chrissi Overlock emphasized that this year’s program allows guests to stay indoors until noon the next day, a significant improvement aimed at keeping individuals warm and easing their morning routines. “We hope to make people’s mornings easier and keep them warmer,” Overlock stated.

The shelter is introducing its new Radical Resilience program, which operates from 8 a.m. to noon at its office. This program is designed to provide a safe space for guests to recharge, grab snacks, and engage in case management services. “It’s crucial for us to have a hub where case managers can meet clients who often lack stable locations,” Overlock explained.

Since opening its door in August 2024, the shelter has made significant upgrades to its facilities, including improved office spaces for case managers and a communal area for guests to rest and eat. Overlock highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming environment, stating, “Guests can come and know they won’t be discriminated against or told to leave.”

The program is powered by dedicated volunteers, underscoring the community’s commitment to helping those in need. Importantly, the shelter has no sobriety requirements, allowing couples to stay together and accommodating pets in limited numbers.

As winter approaches, the Safe Space Winter Shelter is preparing for an influx of guests, making it imperative for community members to get involved. Those interested in volunteering can find more information at safespacechico.org.

This winter, the Safe Space Winter Shelter is more than just a temporary refuge; it’s a vital lifeline for individuals facing homelessness in Chico. With the program’s urgent launch date approaching, the community is urged to come together to support this essential initiative.
