UPDATE: Ryan Coogler has expressed his appreciation for the recent Halloween tribute to his film, Sinners, featured in the latest episode of Abbott Elementary. During a press conference on the Warner Bros. lot on Monday, creator Quinta Brunson revealed that Coogler was “so flattered” by the homage, which included a costume inspired by him and an IMAX screen.

This tribute aired during the Halloween episode titled “Camping,” where characters Janine and Gregory dressed as Coogler and an IMAX screen, highlighting the film’s impressive box office success of nearly $400 million worldwide. Brunson shared that Coogler found out about the tribute through his aunt, who sent him the episode.

“He really appreciated it and was so honored,” Brunson stated, emphasizing the show’s intent to create family-friendly viewing experiences.

The interaction occurred over the weekend at a gala in Los Angeles where Coogler was being honored. Brunson expressed her admiration for him, stating, “He is somebody I admired so much, I don’t admire that many people and I actually admire that man.”

Sinners has become a cultural phenomenon since its release in April, securing its place as the fourth highest-grossing R-rated film in U.S. history. Brunson noted, “It’s really exciting for us to be able to celebrate any filmmakers in any way, but especially this, it helps cement him in culture.”

This is not the first time Abbott Elementary has paid tribute to Coogler’s work. Last season, a character dressed as Black Panther, referencing another of Coogler’s acclaimed projects.

Brunson hinted at the possibility of collaborating with Coogler in the future, suggesting a guest-starring role in Season 6 where he could share insights about the film industry.

Viewers can catch the Halloween episode of Abbott Elementary now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, while Sinners is available on HBO Max and PVOD platforms. New Hulu subscribers can start with a 30-day free trial, after which the subscription costs $10.99 per month for the basic plan.

The excitement around this tribute highlights not only the show’s creativity but also the growing impact of Coogler’s work in popular culture. As fans eagerly await more from both creators, the bond between Abbott Elementary and Sinners continues to strengthen.
