racs-and-rams-open-new-auditorium-boosting-community-arts

UPDATE: The Riverdale Avenue Community School (RACS) and Riverdale Avenue Middle School (RAMS) have officially opened their new auditorium as of December 12, 2023, marking a transformative investment in educational and community engagement at their historic Brownsville campus, established over 104 years ago.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by students, families, and educators, alongside key community leaders. Notably, New York State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud, who played a crucial role in securing funding for this project, was present to inaugurate the space. Assemblywoman Latrice Walker also contributed to the celebration, participating in a special performance underscoring the auditorium’s significance as a hub for arts and community connection.

This new facility is not just a building; it represents a vital resource for the Brownsville community, expanding opportunities for student performances, arts programming, and family gatherings. With the auditorium’s launch, RACS and RAMS emphasize their commitment to nurturing student voice and creative expression.

The auditorium is a collaborative effort with Partnership with Children, an organization dedicated to enhancing the emotional, social, and cognitive skills of New York City children. By embedding licensed clinical social workers and youth development specialists in schools, they provide essential support services tailored to community needs. This initiative currently impacts over 20,000 children and families across 40 NYC public schools.

Principal Arabelle Pembroke stated, “Fresh, new and up-to-date spaces in school are important because they send a message to students that they are cared for and valued.” This perspective reflects the broader goal of fostering a supportive environment for students, particularly those growing up in poverty.

The new auditorium addresses a long-standing need within the schools, providing a central venue for not only educational performances but also community events and celebrations. School leaders believe this expansion will significantly enhance the cultural fabric of the school, enabling deeper engagement and connection among students and their families.

As RACS and RAMS continue to be cornerstones of the Brownsville community, the addition of this auditorium is expected to broaden the scope of arts education and community programming significantly. The facility is set to become a vital shared space for students, families, and residents, reinforcing the schools’ roles as leaders in fostering community well-being and cultural expression.

With this development, RACS and RAMS are poised to elevate the educational experience in Brownsville, making this a pivotal moment for both the schools and the community. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting new chapter unfolds.
