Protests are scheduled across the United States this weekend, particularly in metro Detroit, in response to significant political and social issues. Local organizations such as the Detroit Anti-War Committee, Comité de Acción Comunitaria, and MI Students Dream are mobilizing supporters to gather from Friday, January 9, through Sunday, January 10. Demonstrations are being organized following the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good at the hands of an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7.

Friday’s Events: Vigils and Rallies

The weekend’s protests kick off on Friday with a protest and vigil at Clark Park in Detroit, starting at 18:00. Local groups, including Detroit Will Breathe and Mi Students Dream, are backing the event, which aims to raise awareness about the ongoing issues in Venezuela and immigration policies. Concurrently, a rally organized by the Oak Park Concerned Citizens is set to take place at 28992 Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak from 15:30 to 17:00. This rally aligns with a national initiative led by May Day Strong and other organizations to address the recent events in Venezuela and the impact of ICE actions. Additionally, Indivisible Ann Arbor will host a candlelight vigil at Liberty Plaza at 18:00.

Saturday’s Demonstrations: Focus on Detention Policies

On Saturday, the protests intensify with a gathering at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, organized by the Detroit Anti-War Committee, the Metro Detroit Democratic Socialists of America, and various local groups. The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 15:00. Indivisible is encouraging participation in this central Detroit protest, as well as supporting several local “ICE Out For Good” protests in surrounding suburbs, including Oak Park and Lake Orion. In Ann Arbor, Indivisible will also host a rally and march to further highlight these pressing issues.

Sunday’s Continuing Actions

The weekend concludes with additional protests on Sunday, led by several chapters of Indivisible, including those from Oxford and Saline. The organization Stand Up Fight Back Southeast Michigan is planning a protest in Rochester Hills at 14:30. These events reflect a growing movement among community members advocating for social justice and a reevaluation of U.S. immigration policies.

The planned protests not only reflect local concerns but also resonate with national sentiments regarding immigration and foreign policy. Organizers encourage participants to join in solidarity and raise their voices on these critical issues. For more information, individuals can contact Natalie Davies at [email protected].
