URGENT UPDATE: Printpack Inc. has announced it will close its Elgin manufacturing facility in January 2026, resulting in the layoff of 111 employees. This decision impacts a plant that has been a vital part of the Elgin community for over 30 years and is part of a broader trend of operational challenges facing the company.
The layoff process will commence in early January and is expected to continue through April, as the Atlanta-based company winds down operations at its 1400 Abbott Drive location, according to state filings with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification. Chief Operating Officer Jack Austin expressed deep regret over the decision, stating, “It is never easy to make a decision that affects the lives and livelihoods of our association.”
The closure is a significant blow to the local economy, which relies heavily on manufacturing, generating over $2 billion annually. Printpack specializes in producing flexible and specialty rigid packaging for various sectors, including fresh produce and health care products.
In an effort to assist affected employees, Printpack plans to offer transfer opportunities, severance packages, and career transition support. Austin’s visit to the plant in November to convey this news underscores the company’s commitment to a compassionate transition for its workforce.
Despite this setback, the Elgin area is experiencing other economic developments. Earlier this year, the protective packaging company Pregis announced plans to expand its operations in Elgin, further contributing to the local manufacturing landscape. Additionally, Elgin Community College is in the process of building a new 150,000-square-foot Manufacturing and Technology Center, set to open in fall 2026. This facility will address the growing demand for skilled labor in fields such as welding and automation.
Printpack, recognized for its innovation with a recent AmeriStar award for a new compostable packaging developed for Skittles, will leave a lasting impact on the packaging industry. The award celebrates excellence and innovation, highlighting the company’s contributions over the years.
As the situation develops, the focus remains on supporting the affected employees while the community prepares for new opportunities in the manufacturing sector. More updates are anticipated as the closure date approaches.
