BREAKING: Phil Olivier, a beloved educator and musician, has passed away at the age of 87. He died peacefully in the early morning of December 1, 2025, in Santa Cruz, California, following a long illness.
Olivier’s legacy as a dedicated teacher and cherished family man resonates deeply within the community. Born on August 16, 1937 in San Francisco, he was raised in Berkeley and graduated from UC Berkeley with degrees in sociology and education. His career in teaching began at Kensington School in Berkeley, where he met his wife, Kaye, the love of his life.
In 1968, the Olivier family relocated to Santa Cruz, where Phil dedicated 29 years to teaching at Bradley School in Corralitos. The family spent countless joyful hours camping across the western United States, with cherished summer trips to the Sierra, particularly around Tuolomne Meadows.
Phil was not only a passionate educator but also an accomplished musician. He spent over 30 years singing with the Cabrillo Chorus, filling his home with music daily. His enthusiasm for life extended to photography, writing, and hiking, as he explored the beauty of nature and traveled across Europe, Africa, and Hawaii.
Described as having a contagious zest for life, Phil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife Kaye, sons Scot and Jordan, daughter Robin, and numerous grandchildren, who will deeply miss his humor and laughter. Phil was also a caring pet owner, often reminiscing about his beloved dogs and his hopes of meeting them at the rainbow bridge.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Adam Yarme, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and dedicated caregivers, especially Cameron, for their compassionate care during Phil’s final days.
A memorial service will take place at St John’s Episcopal Church in Aptos on January 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception in the parish hall. The family welcomes donations in Phil’s name to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, The Alzheimer’s Association, or the SPCA of Santa Cruz County.
