Paul Joseph Kelly, a cherished family man and avid sailor, passed away peacefully at his home in Cundys Harbor, Maine, on February 25, 2026, at the age of 79. Surrounded by his loving family, including his son Brandon T. Kelly and partner of 22 years, Louise Jonaitis, Paul leaves behind a legacy of adventure and warmth.
Early Life and Career
Born and raised in Beverly, Massachusetts, Paul was the youngest of two siblings in a close-knit family. He grew up alongside four cousins whom he considered siblings. His educational journey took him to Paul Smith’s College in New York and later, New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire, where he met his wife, Sharon Johnson. Their 22-year marriage brought the joy of their only son, Brandon.
Following his graduation, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. This decision led the family to Brunswick, Maine, where they spent three years living on Burnt Island. There, Paul served as one of the last lighthouse keepers at Burnt Island Light, an experience that would shape his lifelong love for the sea. After leaving the Coast Guard, he transitioned to a career in commercial fishing, initially working on sword fishing boats before owning his own vessel.
Pursuits and Passions
In the early 1990s, Paul shifted gears to work as a salesman for Lindenmeyr Munroe, where his authentic personality earned him considerable success. Tragically, his wife Sharon passed away in 1992 at the young age of 43, a loss that profoundly affected him.
Paul was not only dedicated to his career but also passionate about sailing. He became well-known at the Centerboard Yacht Club in South Portland, competing fiercely in various races, including the renowned Bermuda One-Two Yacht Race. His beloved sailboat, Pashabra, became a sanctuary for family memories and adventures. His competitive spirit and love for the sport made a lasting impression on fellow sailors.
Family was at the heart of Paul’s life. He cherished moments spent with his three grandsons, Connor, Daniel, and Ryan, often attending their sporting events and celebrating holidays together. Paul had a unique tradition of calling each family member on their birthday to sing his special rendition of “Happy Birthday to You.”
As time passed and sailing became more challenging, Paul discovered a new passion for kayaking. He and Louise embarked on numerous kayaking trips around the picturesque Cundys Harbor, enjoying the local landscape and wildlife. They also appreciated leisurely walks along the Land Trust trails and day trips to local lakes for fishing.
In his later years, Paul embraced the art of painting, creating over 50 canvas pieces through paint-by-numbers. These artworks will be treasured by his family as lasting reminders of his creativity and spirit.
Legacy and Remembrance
Paul Kelly is remembered not only for his adventurous spirit but also for his strong handshake, even demeanor, and larger-than-life personality. He was a beloved figure to those who knew him and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his son, Brandon T. Kelly, and daughter-in-law, Sarah S. Kelly, of Scarborough; his grandsons, Connor J. Kelly of Saco, and Daniel M. Kelly and Ryan P. Kelly of Scarborough; his partner, Louise Jonaitis of Harpswell, and her son, Daniel Jonaitis; his brother, Daniel Kelly, and sister-in-law, Donna Kelly, of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire; and numerous cousins. Paul was predeceased by his wife, Sharon Johnson Kelly, and cousins, Peter and David McGarr.
