BREAKING: OpenAI has just launched a revolutionary new subscription plan for ChatGPT in India, called ChatGPT GO, priced at just ₹399 per month (approximately $4.60). This new offering, which debuts today, is a significant reduction from the existing ₹1,999 (about $23) per month Plus Plan, making advanced AI technology more accessible for millions of users.
In a move designed to enhance user experience, ChatGPT GO will provide users with 10 times higher message limits, 10 times more image generations, and 10 times more file uploads compared to the free tier. Additionally, it promises twice the memory retention for more personalized interactions. Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, emphasized that this plan is a direct response to user feedback seeking affordability.
“We just launched ChatGPT GO in India, a new subscription tier that gives users in India more access to our most popular features,” Turley stated. He added that rolling out this plan in India first will allow OpenAI to gather valuable feedback before considering expansion to other countries.
The timing of this launch is critical, as India has recently emerged as a leader in ChatGPT app downloads, with over 29 million downloads recorded in the last 90 days alone. However, the app has only generated $3.6 million in revenue during this period. Experts believe that the competitive pricing of ChatGPT GO will likely drive a surge in subscriptions, tapping into India’s vast internet user base of over 850 million.
The launch of ChatGPT GO also coincides with OpenAI’s recent implementation of local currency pricing across all its plans, enhancing convenience for users. Furthermore, the new plan supports payments through Unified Payment Interface (UPI), India’s popular digital payment system, making it even easier for consumers to subscribe.
In addition to OpenAI’s development, other AI companies are also making strides to capture India’s growing market. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer free subscriptions, while Google introduced a complimentary AI Pro plan for students in India for one year. Although OpenAI’s ChatGPT GO does not offer free trials, the reduced price point is poised to increase its subscription conversion rate significantly.
As OpenAI continues to innovate and adapt to user needs, the implications of this launch extend beyond just pricing. With the ChatGPT GO plan, users in India will have access to advanced AI capabilities that were previously cost-prohibitive, potentially reshaping the landscape of AI usage in the region.
