norristown-launches-hometown-heroes-banners-program-for-veterans

UPDATE: Norristown has just announced a new initiative to honor local veterans with the Hometown Heroes banners program, set to launch in 2026 and 2027. The program aims to celebrate the selfless service of local heroes, including Army Spc. Walter Bartasch, a Bronze Star recipient killed in Vietnam, whose story inspired this initiative.

This program comes at a poignant time, just before Veterans Day, when communities across the nation honor their military servicemembers. The banners will proudly display images of veterans along key streets, including Main Street and DeKalb Street, showcasing their service branches and eras, such as WWII and the War on Terror.

The initiative will feature 160 light poles available for display, each banner costing $135. After a two-year display period, sponsors will receive the banners as a keepsake. This effort, led by Anne Henning Scheuring, an experienced advocate for veterans’ recognition, follows her successful program in Lansdale, which now boasts over 500 banners.

Norristown’s rich history of military service is underscored by the stories of veterans like Winfield Scoot Hancock and John F. Hartranft, who have streets and facilities named in their honor. Their contributions, along with Bartasch’s, highlight the sacrifices made by local residents for their country.

The banners will hang from May until Veterans Day each year, providing a visible reminder of the town’s proud military heritage. The public is encouraged to participate by sharing stories of their own heroes, contributing to a broader tapestry of remembrance and appreciation.

As Norristown prepares to tell these vital stories, residents can find more information on the program at norristown.org/683/Hometown-Heroes or visit Norristown Municipal Hall at 235 E. Airy St.. This Veterans Day, join the community in honoring those who have served and sacrificed, ensuring their legacies live on through the Hometown Heroes banners.
