new-year-s-eve-celebrations-kick-off-america-s-250th-anniversary

UPDATE: As revelers gather tonight to celebrate New Year’s Eve, they will simultaneously kick off the nation’s historic 250th anniversary, marking the Semiquincentennial of the United States. This momentous occasion echoes the 200th birthday celebrations held at the Pottsville Assembly in 1975, setting the stage for a year filled with national pride and remembrance.

Plans for the 250th celebration in Schuylkill County are still unfolding. Earlier this year, the county dedicated its Liberty Tree in Tamaqua, planting a Tulip Poplar seedling that shares genetic lineage with trees from the American Revolution. During the dedication, Rev. Dillon Epler honored the nation’s founders, stating, “They dreamed of liberty not just as a word, but as a seed planted for future generations.” About 100 attendees gathered at the park across from the historic Tamaqua Railroad Station to witness this significant event.

America250PA, the organization spearheading the state’s anniversary celebrations, confirmed that each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties will receive a Liberty Tree. The official celebration is set for July 4, 2026, the date when the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776, symbolizing the colonies’ break from Great Britain.

In a series of statewide events leading up to the anniversary, the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia will host a special exploration of the Declaration’s impact from February 14-16. This program will also spotlight the lives of two pivotal presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Community engagement is ramping up. In Orwigsburg, a committee led by the Orwigsburg Historical Society is busy planning a spectacular celebration for the weekend of July 4, 2026. Highlights include a “Celebration of Patriotism, Faith, and Community Spirit” on July 3 at St. John’s United Church of Christ. At dusk, the town’s Market Square will illuminate with luminaria in anticipation of the fireworks show hosted by the Schuylkill County Country Club.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the National Bell Ringing at 2:00 PM on July 4. This tradition honors the original 13 colonies, ringing bells 13 times to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Orwigsburg Mayor Barry Berger will read the Declaration during the festivities, echoing the first reading by Col. John Nixon in 1776 that ignited fervor across the newly formed nation.

As the nation prepares for this monumental anniversary, the significance of community and history is palpable. The American Revolution not only reshaped the future of the United States but also fostered a spirit of freedom and unity that continues to resonate today.

Stay tuned for more updates as local and state events are announced leading up to the grand celebration on July 4, 2026. The countdown to the Semiquincentennial has officially begun!
