new-storm-set-to-slam-bay-area-monday-with-heavy-rain

UPDATE: A powerful new storm is set to hit the Bay Area starting Monday, just hours after the last remnants of an atmospheric river moved out. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that light rain began affecting the region around 5 p.m. Sunday, but the main event is rapidly approaching.

This incoming storm is expected to unleash heavy rainfall, particularly in the North Bay, where interior mountains could see up to 3 inches of rain. Other areas in the North Bay and coastal ranges may receive between 2 and 2.5 inches. In contrast, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara counties are likely to experience 0.75 to 1 inch of rain.

According to NWS meteorologist Nicole Sarment, “This storm is moving quickly and presents a greater chance for thunderstorms.” She added that the wet conditions could lead to soil saturation, raising concerns about run-off and minor flooding. The first thunder strikes have already been detected offshore, signaling the storm’s intensity.

Since the beginning of November, the Bay Area has faced three storm systems, with Mt. Umunum receiving 3.3 inches of rain since Thursday. Other locations include Santa Cruz with 1.3 inches, Livermore at 0.9 inches, and San Jose with a mere 0.13 inches reported.

While the speed of this storm system reduces flooding risks, slick roadways remain a major concern for commuters. The NWS advises residents to prepare for hazardous driving conditions due to the expected rainfall.

The rain is anticipated to taper off by Tuesday; however, more light showers are expected on Wednesday morning and potentially again on Friday as the weekend approaches. These additional showers are not forecasted to be nearly as heavy, with estimates of less than 0.75 inches in many areas.

Additionally, high surf conditions are predicted to return to local beaches by Friday, and the NWS will provide more details as the week progresses. Residents are urged to stay updated on the latest weather alerts and take necessary precautions.

As the Bay Area braces for this significant weather event, officials recommend staying informed and preparing for potential disruptions. The urgency of the situation calls for immediate attention as the storm system approaches.
