new-nonprofit-launches-24-7-support-for-overwhelmed-caregivers

URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking nonprofit, Caregiver OneCall, has just launched a 24/7 emotional support hotline aimed at helping caregivers cope with the immense challenges of their roles. Founded by Nikki K. Lopez in Antioch, California, this initiative responds to the urgent needs of caregivers, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lopez’s inspiration for Caregiver OneCall emerged during her own caregiving journey in 2020. While tending to her bed-bound grandmother, Beryl Gordon, Lopez faced overwhelming responsibilities that left her physically and emotionally exhausted. Reflecting on her struggles, she asked, “Who cares for the caregivers?” This question sparked the creation of a dedicated support system for those who often go unnoticed.

“Caring for someone is not new,” Lopez stated. “But the emotional, mental, and psychological support needed for caregivers is crucial.” Caregiver OneCall aims to fill this gap, offering a platform for caregivers to share their experiences and find solace among peers who truly understand their struggles.

The organization, which launched in February, is an extension of Lopez’s previous work with Caring Haven Home Care. It provides essential services including emotional support, virtual training, and advocacy. A key offering is their four-hour respite service, allowing caregivers to drop off their loved ones for a few hours of care. These sessions, funded by a grant from the Alzheimer’s Association, are crucial for caregivers to recharge and focus on their own well-being.

Currently, these respite services are available on Mondays and Saturdays in Antioch, Tuesdays in Concord, and Thursdays in Richmond. Lopez emphasizes that every board member has personal caregiving experience, ensuring the support provided is deeply empathetic and relevant.

The impact of Caregiver OneCall is already evident. For example, Vicki and Carl Doolittle, a couple married for 59 years, have found relief through these services. Vicki, Carl’s primary caregiver after his dementia diagnosis, initially felt anxious about utilizing Caregiver OneCall’s respite. However, upon seeing Carl engaged in activities and smiling after a session, her worries transformed into gratitude. “It was such a heartwarming feeling… I realized I needed this for my mental and emotional health,” Vicki expressed.

As Caregiver OneCall approaches its first anniversary in February 2026, Lopez acknowledges the journey ahead. With an estimated 125 caregiver families in need within Alameda and Contra Costa counties, her organization’s mission is only beginning. Currently, they are seeking to raise $20,000 to expand their outreach and services.

HOW TO HELP: Community members are encouraged to contribute to this vital cause. Donations can be made at sharethespiriteastbay.org/donate or via mail, ensuring that Caregiver OneCall can continue to support those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

Together, we can help provide the necessary resources and emotional support for caregivers who often sacrifice their own well-being for the sake of their loved ones. This urgent call for help highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotional toll of caregiving, making it clear that in the journey of care, no one should feel alone.
