UPDATE: More than 200 attendees gathered this afternoon at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen to solemnly honor veterans of the Korean War during the annual Korean War Remembrance Ceremony. The event, organized by New Hampshire’s Korean-American community, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by both American and South Korean soldiers during a conflict that remains deeply significant.

The ceremony, held on June 30, 2023, featured military flags, wreaths, and heartfelt tributes, bringing together families, dignitaries, and community members. “Your attendance at these tremendous events every year … it forces all who care to never forget these vulnerable veterans,” stated Park Sun-woo, former president of the New Hampshire Korean Veterans Association.

This year’s remembrance is especially critical as it marks the ongoing solidarity between the United States and South Korea, forged during a war that resulted in significant casualties: over 500,000 South Korean troops137,000 killed, while 37,000 U.S. troops92,000 were wounded. The conflict, often termed the “Forgotten War,” was ignited on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea.

Speakers at the ceremony echoed the lasting impact of the war, reminding attendees of the valor displayed by both nations’ soldiers. Jaehui Kim, the consul general of the Republic of Korea in Boston, remarked, “Your courage was with us in our darkest hour and it has continued to inspire generations.”

As the two nations’ anthems resonated through the cemetery, a powerful sense of unity enveloped the crowd. The ceremony included the exchange of remembrance gifts between veterans, a poignant moment symbolizing their shared history and commitment to peace.

U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during the war, stating, “America answered the call to fight the forces of tyranny from the north, and together we demonstrated strength to the world.”

This annual gathering, which has taken place since 2007, not only honors those who served but also reinforces the ongoing connection and mutual respect between American and South Korean veterans. As families shared stories and memories, the impact of this ceremony was felt deeply, reminding all present of the importance of remembrance and unity.

The event concluded with a call to action for all attendees to keep the memories alive and ensure that the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers are never forgotten. As communities continue to reflect on the lessons of the Korean War, the legacy of freedom and solidarity remains a powerful testament to shared history.

Stay tuned for further updates as the Korean-American community continues to honor their veterans and uphold their commitment to remembrance.
