UPDATE: The NBA has just imposed a $250,000 fine on the Cleveland Cavaliers for breaching the league’s player participation policy. The violation occurred when All-Star guard Darius Garland did not play in a high-stakes nationally televised game against the Toronto Raptors on November 24, 2023.

This penalty marks the second instance this season the Cavaliers have faced financial repercussions for similar violations. Just days ago, on November 18, the team was fined $100,000 for resting key players Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley during a game against the Miami Heat on November 12.

The league’s investigation revealed that Garland was indeed able to participate, having played the previous night against the LA Clippers. However, he was left out of the lineup for the critical matchup in Toronto, a game broadcast on Peacock in the U.S. and Sportsnet in Canada. Garland’s absence from this televised game has drawn significant scrutiny, as he is classified as a star player under the NBA’s participation guidelines.

In a decisive turn of events, the Raptors seized the opportunity, extending their winning streak to eight games with a 110-99 victory over the Cavaliers. Additionally, Cleveland was also without De’Andre Hunter (rest) and Jarrett Allen (sprained finger), further complicating their efforts on the court.

The Cavaliers’ decision to rest Garland has sparked debate among fans and analysts alike, questioning the impact of such strategies on the integrity of the sport. The league’s stringent enforcement of the participation policy underscores the NBA’s commitment to ensuring that fans see star players in action, especially during prime time broadcasts.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Cavaliers to see if they adjust their approach in future games. Fans are eager to know if the team will face further penalties or if they will comply with the league’s guidelines moving forward.
