national-breastfeeding-month-kicks-off-with-urgent-call-to-action

UPDATE: August marks the start of National Breastfeeding Month, an urgent call for enhanced support for breastfeeding families. The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee and healthcare advocates nationwide are emphasizing the critical need for community and workplace support to promote this essential form of infant nutrition.

Breastfeeding is not merely a feeding choice; it is a powerful tool for lifelong health. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition, strengthens babies’ immune systems, and reduces the risk of chronic illnesses. For mothers, it lowers the risks of breast and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and postpartum depression. A recent study in The Lancet reveals that for every 12 months a woman breastfeeds, her breast cancer risk decreases by 4.3%.

Despite these benefits, many families encounter significant barriers to breastfeeding, including inadequate parental leave, lack of workplace accommodations, and social stigma. The theme for this year’s observance is “Forward Together,” highlighting the importance of connecting families with evidence-based information and peer support.

In an effort to promote breastfeeding awareness, the Cottonwood Extension District will host a celebration on August 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. at the Hays Public Library. This event is an opportunity for community members to learn about breastfeeding support in Ellis County and celebrate the importance of breastfeeding. Refreshments will be served.

What can you do to support this vital cause? Consider advocating for local breastfeeding-friendly policies and businesses, pushing for paid family leave, and sharing resources with new parents. Organizations like La Leche League and local breastfeeding coalitions offer critical support to families navigating their breastfeeding journeys.

Breastfeeding is a personal journey, but it should never be faced alone. This National Breastfeeding Month, let’s work together to ensure every family has the resources they need to thrive from the first latch to the last. Join us in celebrating and supporting breastfeeding mothers everywhere.
