UPDATE: An MTA worker was violently punched in the face while attempting to break up a heated argument on the subway platform early Thursday morning, just days after a shocking murder at the same location.
Michael Grosso, a 59-year-old track worker, was on duty shortly after midnight at the Jay Street subway station when he intervened in a dispute between a man and a passenger. According to police sources, the suspect, described as a black male in his 40s and dressed entirely in black, immediately turned on Grosso, striking him on the left side of the face before fleeing the scene.
Despite the brutal attack, Grosso declined medical attention at the scene, demonstrating remarkable resilience. The assault occurred just a week after a notorious incident when Nicola Tanzi, a beloved 64-year-old security guard, was murdered nearby. Tanzi was beaten and stomped to death after he helped a man named David Mazariegos, 25, access the subway. Mazariegos was later arrested in Times Square while carrying a samurai sword, a detail that has left the community in shock.
This recent wave of violence at the Jay Street station has raised urgent concerns about safety in the New York City subway system. Following the gruesome murder of Tanzi, this latest incident has heightened fears among commuters and transit workers alike.
Police continue to investigate the attack on Grosso and have urged anyone with information to come forward. The Transit Workers Union has been contacted for comment but has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the safety of MTA employees in light of these incidents.
As authorities ramp up patrols in the area, commuters are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The MTA is also reviewing security protocols to ensure the safety of its workers and passengers alike.
