UPDATE: A live Nativity play at Briarwood Baptist Church in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, turned into a chaotic scene last night, December 12, 2025, as unexpected cold temperatures and a series of mishaps challenged the production.
The church’s children’s choir was set to perform “A Night of Miracles,” but the event quickly became a test of creativity and resilience. With temperatures plummeting to a record low for mid-December, excitement mixed with anxiety as attendees braved the elements to witness the performance.
Just before the show, tragedy struck when the original pony intended for the production was hit by a vehicle. However, a replacement was found at the last minute, albeit one with limited acting skills. As the evening progressed, further misfortune hit when both the actor playing Joseph and the Master of Ceremony suffered leg fractures, leaving them on crutches. Despite these setbacks, the cast persevered.
The performance was initially planned to be held indoors, where the audience was comfortably seated. However, as the show moved outside to the metal chairs, the cold became unbearable. “It was a miracle we all lived through it!” said Anne McKee, the event organizer.
As the Nativity scene unfolded, the actors faced additional challenges. During a crucial moment, the replacement pony balked, and it was reported that a “booted foot” (speculated to belong to McKee’s husband) intervened to encourage the animal. The set, made from refrigerator boxes, added to the charm but also complications when the door to the inn stuck, causing confusion on stage.
In a twist of fate, the production faced a sudden crisis when the five borrowed sheep escaped. McKee quickly consulted her husband, asking, “How much do sheep cost?” Thankfully, with a spotlight borrowed for the evening, the sheep were located in nearby woods, illuminating a moment of relief amidst the tension.
After the performance, attendees gathered inside the church recreation hall to enjoy Christmas cookies and wassail, where McKee’s husband shared his emotional reaction, stating, “You have taken me down some long, winding paths… but this one has got to be the most inspiring!”
Despite the cold chaos, the community rallied together, showcasing not just their resilience but also the warmth of their shared spirit. “God blessed us with the very warmest, cold Christmas ever!” McKee reflected, capturing the essence of the night.
As the dust settles on this unforgettable evening, the story of Briarwood Baptist Church’s Nativity play serves as a reminder of the joy and unpredictability of community events during the holiday season.
