URGENT UPDATE: The No. 3 Michigan Wolverines delivered a stunning performance, blanking defending national champions No. 2 Western Michigan with a commanding 4-0 victory Thursday night at Yost Ice Arena. This win keeps Michigan’s record flawless at 7-0 this season.

Freshman goalie Jack Ivankovic showcased his skills, making 32 saves to secure the shutout in a high-stakes clash between two top-five teams. The Wolverines wasted no time, scoring just 1:50 into the game when Jayden Perron converted a slick pass from Nick Moldenhauer, firing a shot beneath the crossbar for his fourth goal of the season.

The intensity ramped up as both teams exchanged penalty minutes throughout the night, but Michigan’s top-ranked power play shined, converting on two of their opportunities. In contrast, the Broncos struggled, finishing 0 for 8 on the power play, which has now dropped them to just 2 for 30 this season. This significant advantage played a crucial role in Michigan’s dominant victory.

Michigan extended their lead to 2-0 at the 8:12 mark of the second period when Michael Hage, a first-round pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft, scored his sixth goal of the year. Hage, who currently ranks fifth nationally in scoring, capitalized on a loose puck during a chaotic scramble in front of the net, bringing his total points to 11 with this performance.

Just 1:37 into the third period, Michigan struck again on the power play. Hage assisted on a goal by freshman Adam Valentini, who found the back of the net with ease after a deflection off Hage’s helmet. Junior forward Garrett Schifsky capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with just 10 seconds remaining.

Ivankovic’s performance was vital, particularly in the first period, where he faced multiple high-danger chances from the Broncos. His ability to shut down Western Michigan’s offense was evident when Bobby Cowan hit the post late in the first period, preventing a potential rebound goal.

This victory marks Michigan’s best start since 1979, with the team outscoring opponents 44-7 so far this season. As both teams prepare for a rematch, the series continues Friday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.

The Wolverines aim to maintain their unbeaten streak and further solidify their title aspirations as the season progresses. Stay tuned for more updates as the home-and-home series unfolds!
