UPDATE: The largest interior renovation at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s Terminal 1 has just been completed, enhancing the travel experience for holiday passengers. The $242 million project, a collaboration between the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines, brings a modern and brighter aesthetic to the terminal, just in time for peak travel season.
Renovations began in the fall of 2023, transforming six of the airport’s seven concourses and 75 Delta gate hold rooms. This significant overhaul aims to elevate the passenger experience, a move that is especially impactful for Delta, which holds a commanding 70% passenger market share at MSP.
Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC, emphasized the urgency of these changes, stating, “In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that elevates the passenger experience — from the checkpoints to the gate areas.” He acknowledged Delta’s crucial role in delivering these modern spaces that enhance MSP’s award-winning customer service.
Among the upgrades are new terrazzo flooring, wall finishes, and cutting-edge LED lighting fixtures. The gate areas have undergone a complete refresh, featuring new seating, carpeting, counters, and signage designed to streamline the travel process. Notably, the introduction of “dynamic gate signs” allows travelers to access flight and destination information quickly from further down the concourse.
These renovations coincide with the completion of the Airport Modernization Program, a decade-long initiative to enhance all pre-security areas, including checkpoints, ticketing, and baggage claim. The MAC invested $182.5 million in this expansive project, while Delta contributed an additional $60 million.
As holiday travelers flock to the airport, the changes are expected to significantly improve the flow and comfort of their journeys. With the upgrades officially unveiled, travelers are encouraged to arrive early to experience the modernized terminal and take advantage of the enhanced services now available.
