This victory not only marks a significant revenge against their familiar rivals but also propels Lovejoy into the next round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs.
The match was an intense battle, with both teams exchanging leads and fighting for every point. Lovejoy, now boasting a record of 31-13, began the match strong, taking the first set 25-10. However, Wakeland, with a record of 26-8, fought back to win the second set 25-22, showcasing their resilience.
Lovejoy’s standout player, opposite hitter Bella Lopez, delivered a stunning performance, including six crucial kills in the deciding fifth set. “We definitely had a chip on our shoulder from last season,” said assistant coach Brooke Puckett. “Our girls were focused from early in the day right until game time.” Last season, Wakeland defeated Lovejoy in the playoffs, making this win particularly sweet for the team.
The match featured dramatic twists, with Lovejoy initially taking a commanding lead before Wakeland rallied to tie the match. The third set was a rollercoaster, featuring 14 ties and seven lead changes, ultimately ending in Lovejoy’s favor at 27-25. Despite Lovejoy’s efforts, Wakeland pushed back, winning the fourth set 25-21 to force a decisive fifth.
Puckett praised her players, emphasizing their chemistry and determination. “They’ve just been incredible,” she remarked. “In a dog fight like that, team chemistry is what really matters.”
Meanwhile, in another playoff upset, Frisco Liberty advanced with a 25-19, 25-10, 25-27, 25-19 victory over Prosper Walnut Grove. Liberty’s star, Jaiden Harris, led her team with 20 kills and showcased incredible service skills in the final set. Liberty coach Eighmy Dobbins noted the team’s strategic adjustments, especially in the absence of Walnut Grove’s standout player, Danielle Whitmire, who was sidelined with an injury.
